Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed announced in mid March the opening of the new International Terminal on May 16. Reed says, "The international terminal will strengthen Atlanta's position as the capital of the Southeast and a vital global gateway for the United States".

Before opening, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport recruited 1,600 volunteers for a simulation exercise. The international terminal cost nearly $1.5 billion. The volunteers were given a script, boarding passes and told to bring their luggage for the "dress rehearsal" to test potential problems.
To get to the new terminal you must use I-75 South.
