Taxi drivers sue City of Atlanta

On July 2, 2013 about 300 of Atlanta cab drivers  filed a lawsuit againt the City of Atlanta. The lawsuit claims a monopoly in the market that is preventing drivers from making decent money.

Drivers may own their vehicles,  but don't own the permits to operate them. Only 22 taxicab companies can legally obtain the permits, which the lawsut claims them "fiefdom-like control" in the market and forbids drivers from launching their own businesses.

These companies generate more than $21 million each year just on weekly fees they charge their drivers.

If the lawsuit is won by the drivers, it will promote a more competitive taxi industry,  reduce taxicab fares, better quality service as well as better quality of life for drivers.
